My closest friend and her 8-year-old daughter from Sweden came to stay with me this week.
We visited the Community Boathouse on Pier 96 to try their Kayaks. My friend’s daughter Lavinia is an amazing little girl who has an incredible imagination. She impersonates characters depending on her mood, one moment she’s a kitten, a hedgehog or whatever else she decides. There’s no limit to this girl’s creativity. This week she’s been Moana from the movie by the same name. So of course, nothing could be more perfect than kayaking at Pier 96, especially since we weren’t allowed to go past the buoys. You do know that Moana wasn’t allowed to go past the coral reef in the movie, don’t you?
She assigned a character from the movie to me too. I’m the rooster 😊 A little crazy and confused. Yup that’s me.
The boathouse is a non-profit organization that is staffed by volunteers. Everything is free and they provide you with a lock, a safety vest and of course the kayak and the paddle as well. All you need to bring is yourself and wear something you don’t mind getting wet.
The volunteers are very helpful and assist you with everything you need. I’m a bit anxious getting in and out of boats since I had a near drowning incident when I was a child. But the guy that helped me into the kayak was very understanding and made me feel very comfortable.
It’s a fun experience and if you push for it it’s good exercise as well.
